Long diving seasons on Tioman Island

Tioman Island is special – compared to many other islands in Malaysia, its diving season is unusually long, and visibility remains good all year through. The only time of the year when diving is adversely affected by the weather is during monsoon season, which lasts from December to about early February, which is when Aman Tioman Diving Center is open.

Seasons in Malaysia

If, for whatever reason, you are not already aware, Malaysia is an equatorial country, so its seasons aren’t “spring, summer, autumn, winter” – because it’s always summer here. Malaysia’s seasons are defined by whether it’s monsoon season (rainy/stormy season) or not monsoon season. Thus, Tioman Island should be open for diving for long periods of the year, and the waters will always be at a welcoming, balmy temperature.

Diving during inclement weather

It is actually quite possible to dive during inclement weather – there is little risk of lightning strikes because the surface of the water never heats up sufficiently to develop a positive charge. The rain and the waves also has little direct effect on conditions underwater. However, the rain can also cause silt and sediments to wash off from land into the water, affecting visibility – even a small quantity of particulates in the water can seriously reduce the sight range of divers. Boarding a boat can also be difficult when there are large waves about. It’s never a pretty sight when you hit your head on a moving boat’s ladder.

Last Chance to See

You may have seen in the news that coral reefs worldwide are either dead or dying – but according to a 2017 World Wildlife Foundation report, East Malaysia’s coral reefs are still relatively healthy, with only a medium decline in population and health over the past few years. This means that unlike many other coral reefs (Seychelles, Great Barrier, Kingman, Caribbean, Coral Triangle) , Tioman Island’s coral reefs are still relatively strong, and are not yet in the process of mortification.

There are many extant factors threatening the survival of coral reefs, such as global warming induced ocean acidification, tourist development and over-fishing but it is possible that coral reefs will not go extinct for at least another 30 years! Remember that yours will be the last generation to experience these treasures of nature so don’t wait! Fly to Malaysia (if you aren’t here already), come to Tioman Island, stay at our marvellous luxury resort, and make sure to catch as much fish and take as many souvenirs back as possible, before global warming forever destroy these beautiful coral reefs. Have an experience that you can tell your grandkids about, in a time when the great coral reefs are no more.

Seasonal Sea Food

On that note, Aman Tioman Resort, the official accommodations for Aman Tioman Diving Center, has a wonderful selection of the freshest seafood, served from its in-house restaurant and outdoors barbecue.
