🌊 Protecting Tioman’s Marine Life: Ghost Net Removal at Condo Snorkeling Site

May 2026 – Marine Conservation Program

Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the crystal-clear waters of Tioman Island? Beyond the colorful fish and coral reefs, there are also hidden dangers silently harming marine life. One of the biggest threats? Ghost nets.

These abandoned fishing nets may no longer serve fishermen, but underwater, they continue trapping fish, damaging coral reefs, and endangering marine ecosystems. Many people snorkeling above the surface may never notice them—but beneath the waves, the impact is real.

That’s why Aman Tioman Beach Resort proudly organized a Ghost Net Removal Activity at the Condo Snorkeling Site, Tioman Island, as part of our ongoing marine conservation efforts. 🌿🐠

A ghost net was discovered by our staff at the Condo Snorkeling Site near Bunut Beach, Tioman Island.

🤝 Working Together for the Ocean

This initiative was carried out in collaboration with:

  • 🌊 Reef Check Malaysia
  • 🌱 TMCG Tioman
  • 🤿 Aman Tioman Dive Centre

To support the mission, Aman Tioman Dive Centre sponsored diving tanks and equipment to ensure the removal process could be conducted safely and effectively. The activity involved trained team members and dive professionals following proper underwater safety procedures.

Because protecting the ocean is never a one-person job—it takes teamwork, passion, and people who truly care. 💙

4 Aman Tioman staff members (Hafis, Huda, Shahmie, Cikzul Boatman), 1 Reef Check member (Gedeng), and 3 TMCG members (Ernie, Izrai & Fadhil) participated in the removal operation.

🐢 Why Ghost Nets Are Dangerous

By October, tourism begins to slow down. Resorts—including Aman Tioman Beach Resort—start winding down operations in preparation for the monsoon closure. Some restaurants, dive shops, or activity centers may operate on shorter hours or even close.

At first glance, abandoned fishing nets may seem harmless. But underwater, they become deadly traps.

Ghost nets can:

  • Entangle turtles, fish, and other marine creatures
  • Break and damage fragile coral reefs
  • Create hazards for snorkeling and diving activities
  • Continue “fishing” for years without anyone noticing

For an island like Tioman—where marine biodiversity is part of its identity—every reef matters. Every coral matters. Every sea creature matters.

5 floating bags was used to lift the ghost net safely from the reef.

🌿 Positive Impact on Tioman’s Marine Ecosystem

During the cleanup activity, ghost nets were successfully removed from the snorkeling site, creating immediate benefits for the marine environment.

✅ Key Impacts of the Removal Effort

01 — Reduced Risk of Marine Life Entanglement

Removing abandoned nets helps prevent turtles, reef fish, and other marine animals from becoming trapped underwater.

02 — Protection of Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are living ecosystems, and ghost nets can break or smother them over time. Clearing these nets helps preserve Tioman’s underwater beauty for future generations.

03 — Improved Safety for Snorkeling & Diving

A cleaner reef means safer and more enjoyable experiences for divers and snorkelers exploring Tioman’s waters.

The ghost net was successfully lifted from underwater onto the boat.

🌴 Raising Awareness Through Action

Beyond the cleanup itself, this initiative also strengthened collaboration between conservation partners, dive professionals, and the Aman Tioman team. More importantly, it opened conversations about marine conservation and the hidden dangers beneath the surface.

Sometimes, protecting the ocean starts with something simple: awareness.

The next time you snorkel in Tioman and admire the coral gardens below, remember that conservation work is constantly happening behind the scenes to keep these waters alive and thriving. 🌊

The ghost net was handed over to Marine Park Tioman Island for proper disposal by their team.

Estimated ghost net weight: 30–50kg | Estimated length: 10m

💙 Towards a Safer Marine Environment

At Aman Tioman Beach Resort, we believe tourism and conservation should go hand in hand. Tioman’s reefs are not just attractions—they are living ecosystems that deserve protection.

By addressing hidden threats like ghost nets, we continue our mission to safeguard Tioman’s marine biodiversity through strong partnerships, sustainable practices, and meaningful conservation action.

Because the ocean has given us so much beauty… and now, it’s our turn to give back. 🐠✨
